Lawn Top Dressing Service – Local Lawns – Kanata & Stittsville
Some lawns don’t come with very much soil. Dig a few inches in some places in Kanata Lakes and you’ll hit bedrock! Sometimes adding some is an excellent idea. Top dressing your lawn is quite similar to fertilizing your lawn. Top soil provides a very slow release of nutrients for your turf. When properly applied you will see results for up to a couple years! It’s a great way to add some resilience to your lawn. It’s also really nice if you are trying to get new grass to grow with an Overseeding Service. Top soil will provide nutrients as well as a loose hold for your seedling’s roots to grab onto.
The biggest mistake we see all the time is when too much topsoil is added and then not raked in properly. This buries the existing turf and ends up doing more damage than good. Preparing a lawn by first cutting it back short is a crucial step. After make SURE not to bury the lawn. The short grass should be bristly and want to stick straight up. (Like a brush cut haircut.) This way the existing blades of grass will stick up through the topsoil as opposed to getting flattened down and suffocated of oxygen and light. The idea here is to strengthen your existing lawn, not start all over again. There are better ways to do that.
You may have heard people saying how many weeds came in their topsoil… leaving soil open with nothing growing in it will ALWAYS attract weeds. The grass seed types we use here in Kanata and Stittsville are not native to here. (Kentucky is about 1000 Kms South of here!) Without our help the native plants (usually referred to as weeds) will always take hold first. We add topsoil to an existing lawn carefully so that we can use the existing lawn’s defense mechanisms to protect the new seed (if any) and soil so that it can melt into the turf properly – weed free.
