Lawn Dethatching Service – Local Lawns – Kanata & Stittsville
Usually we provide our dethatching service as a part of our spring cleanup service. It actually goes really well with our Aeration Service as the dethatching machine we use works perfectly to break up the cores pulled out by the aeration machine.
We like to describe lawn aeration basically as exfoliation for your lawn. Some people also call this power raking.
The goal is essentially to remove all the dead grass to make room for new grass, lift up all the matted down turf after it has been flattened by snow all winter and smooth your lawn. Older lawns can get pretty bumpy over time and this machine uses lots of little vertically aligned blades to scratch away at the surface which works beautifully to knock down worm castings, ant hills and any other little bumps in your lawn. This makes your lawn a lot easier to walk on, a less bumpy lawn is also much easier to mow! Depending on how bumpy your lawn is it might need to be dethatched a few times over a few seasons. We have to be very careful that we don’t set the machine too low and take too much off. Best bet is to do this a few times allowing your lawn to recover between each dethatching. Lastly this service is the perfect way to prep your lawn for our Overseeding Service because it loosens the top centimeter of soil which goes a long way in seed-to-soil contact and root taking.
We provide this service by passing our dethatching machine carefully over your whole lawn. After this we vacuum all the thatch up and finish by hand raking the last details bits up. We highly recommend that you overseed directly after this and give your lawn a thorough watering as this service can be a little shocking for your turf. A little fertilizer would be great now too!
The trick to doing this service properly is to make sure that the height is set correctly on the machine and to be very aware of the moisture content of the soil. Too low and too much will be removed and too high will not result in desirable effects. If the soil is too moist the machine can rip out big chunks which is no good either! We vacuum all the thatch up after it’s loosened by the detaching machine which combined with detail raking leaves a professional and effective result that you will definitely notice for the rest of the summer.
- Wakes up turf in the spring and stimulates growth
- Opens up soil for new seed to make good contact which helps increase seed growth percentage
- Allows moisture and nutrients to get to the ground uninhibited by excess thatch
